Veneer, Inlay, Marquetry - Five Day Intensive

Veneer is a thin layer of wood that forms a surface decoration on fine furniture. Marquetry and inlay are traditional craft techniques which use veneer to further enhance the appearance of a surface, making patterns and pictures from thin slices of different timbers. Think of it as painting with wood. This five day course will introduce you to veneer and show you how to decorate wooden objects with it. Your tutor for this week’s masterclass is John Cross, a highly experienced furniture conservator, with a wealth of experience in making and restoring veneer, inlay and marquetry using hand techniques.

Topics will include traditional techniques of designing with timber, selecting and cutting veneers, assembling and gluing the cut pieces, and finishing a piece. Students can either create sample panels using shaped veneers, or restore damaged marquetry and veneer on an object that they bring to the session.

Suitable for beginners. Maximum of 6 students. Teaching hours are 10.00 am to 4.00 pm, Monday to Friday.

Tools and materials are included in the course fee.
