The School of Stuff

The School of Stuff has taught furniture crafts in Dalston, East London since 2010. We have a well-equipped studio on the ground floor of an old industrial building on Shacklewell Lane. Our core courses are upholstery, furniture restoration and cabinet making, but we teach anything related to furniture and even occasionally some things that really aren’t, like shoe making and rag rugs. But it is furniture which drives and fascinates us, and we hope it is the same for you.

The teaching team comprises skilled working upholsterers, cabinet makers and furniture restorers. We are also all experienced teachers. Of course, we don’t know how to do everything – or not quite – so we bring in specialists from time to time.

Tuition at the School of Stuff is rigorous but informal, with small class sizes.  We offer one year and two year training courses in upholstery and furniture restoration for career changers; evening classes for project work; weekend introductory workshops, one off studio sessions, and five day intensive courses in a range of subjects. If there is something you have always wanted to do, but can’t find it in our current offer, let us know and we will try and put on a class for you.
