Chair Caning

Spend a day learning the technique of weaving rattan cane to form a resilient and decorative seat platform. Cane seated chairs first arrived in Europe in the 17th century, brought with cargoes of tea and spices from India and China, and they have been popular ever since, nicely combining decoration and function. We will work on sample frames so that your tutor, Sharon Hennessy, an experienced and accomplished caner, has time to take you through all the stages, including how to finish.  At the end of the day you will take away a skill rather than a finished chair, but you will have the know-how to cane your own furniture at home and you will have a sample frame for reference. Suitable for beginners.
